Rhode Island Water Celebration Day

Planned for September 24th, 2011, Rhode Island Water Celebration Day – the AQUA Initiative, will be a statewide commemoration to highlight Rhode Island’s most significant asset and resource: water.  It will encompass and explore both fresh and salt water sources, water quality in the environment, and water uses for both sustenance and recreational use.

Affiliated with the Leadership Rhode Island program, the core groups of volunteers behind the initial idea have been working to get various local associations involved.  Raising awareness through the partnerships with these companies and events, as well as involvement from local youth groups, camps, and parks, Rhode Island’s Water Celebration Day will be one that develops an extended reach over time.

Important partnerships include an association with WaterFire, an event started in 1994 by Barnaby Evans, an alumnus of Leadership Rhode Island.  Examples of outreach may include a marine organization holding an associated event celebration, a non-profit youth group volunteering to clean a beach front, or an association holding an event for both the young and old to go sailing and boating.  Whatever the situation, the aim will be to infuse the Rhode Island community with knowledge and awareness about this important resource.
